What Los Fresnos does to a window
Los Fresnos sits on Highway 100 halfway between Brownsville and the coast, with farmland on every side and the resaca running through the middle of town. The wind still comes off the Gulf, but by the time it gets here most of the salt has dropped out and what it carries instead is dust. When the fields are dry between crops, and when the weather turns dry in late winter, a fine brown dust comes across the farm roads and settles on every window in town. It does not show much on a cloudy day, but in the low evening light it turns the glass tan.
The resaca lots are the exception. Homes backing onto the old river channel, and out toward Bayview and the Laguna Atascosa side, stay damp under the ash, ebony and mesquite, and the shaded glass grows a green film in the cooler months. Humidity in summer holds the dust on the glass as a paste. Irrigation and well water here are both very hard, and a sprinkler that reaches the house leaves a band of mineral spots along the lower panes that gets worse every season it is left. Screens on the windward side fill with dust and bugs until the view through them goes gray.
